The combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and striking appearance makes stainless steel incredibly versatile. Improve your application with stainless steel bar grating from Indiana Gratings, a leading provider of standard and custom bar grating solutions for the commercial and industrial sectors.

What’s Stainless Steel Bar Grating?

It’s a load-bearing stainless steel panel comprised of horizontal bearing bars joined to perpendicular cross bars at various intervals. This construction style creates an open-air surface that permits superb drainage, ventilation, visibility, and light passage while supporting pedestrian or lightweight wheeled vehicle movement.

Stainless steel is a family of iron-based alloys with a minimum of roughly 11 percent chromium, an element that inhibits rust and withstands extreme temperatures. This material also has a long cycle life and is fully recyclable, making it environmentally friendly.

The Stainless Steel Edge

There are more than 150 types of stainless steel, and a handful of them are ideal for bar grating applications. Specific performance characteristics vary by grade, but here are common traits.

  • Resists Corrosion
  • High Strength
  • Low Weight
  • Easy To Clean
  • High Strength-To-Weight Ratio
  • Stands Up To High Temperatures
  • Simple To Sterilize
  • Withstands Low Temperatures
  • Shiny, Aesthetically Pleasing Appearance
  • Good Weldability
  • Strong Formability
  • Resists Magnetism, In Some Cases

When subjected to impact forces, stainless steel’s protective surface oxide layer self-heals. Unlike other materials, areas of stainless steel that sustain nicks, marks, scratches, or other forms of damage are safe from degradation.

Wide Selection Of Stainless Steel Bar Grating Grades

When it comes to critical applications, the materials from which pedestrian and light wheeled vehicle access infrastructure are made can be the difference between success and failure. We’re experts at fabricating bar grating from many stainless steel grades. Each one has unique performance advantages.

304 Stainless Steel

Offering excellent corrosion resistance at an affordable price point, Alloy 304 is the world’s most widely used stainless steel type. It contains between 16 and 24 percent of chromium, up to 35 percent of nickel, and small amounts of carbon and manganese. Commonly called general-purpose or everyday stainless steel, this stainless steel grade is strong, corrosion-resistant, and low maintenance.

304L Stainless Steel

Type 304L stainless steel is an extra-low carbon version of 304 stainless steel. Also called Alloy 304L, the lower carbon content minimizes deleterious or harmful carbide precipitation. As a result, 304L stainless steel bar grating can be used as-welded in severe corrosion environments.

316 Stainless Steel

Alloy 316, or 316 SS, is an austenitic stainless steel with heightened chromium, nickel, and molybdenum levels. The boosted amount of molybdenum improves resistance to chloride pitting and saltwater degradation. Typically called food- or marine-grade steel, it’s non-magnetic in the annealed condition but can become magnetic when cold-worked or welded.

316L Stainless Steel

316L stainless steel is a highly corrosion-resistant type of stainless steel. Elevated amounts of nickel and molybdenum help prevent crevice and pitting corrosion. Type 316L is very durable and resistant to chemical contaminants and acidic solutions such as bromides, sulfuric acid, and chlorides. It’s perfect for applications where exposure to harsh chemicals, solvents, or process media is expected.

Stainless Steel Bar Grating, The Way You Need It

Along with the material grade, another major consideration when choosing the appropriate bar grating for your application is the construction method. Surfaces can also be smooth or serrated, which provides additional traction. Each style offers unique advantages.

Swage-Locked Stainless Steel Bar Grating

Swaged stainless steel bar grating is fabricated by inserting hollow tube cross bars into bearing bars with pre-punched holes. The crossbars are then permanently secured using a swaging reshaping process. With cross bars recessed below the top surface of the bearing bars, swage-locked grating offers clean lines and a distinct appearance.

Welded Stainless Steel Grating

A grating type where bearing bars and cross bars are resistance welded under high heat and pressure, forming a permanent joint. This creates a rugged, one-piece structural panel with a smooth and flat surface that’s safe for walking.

At Your Service

At Indiana Gratings, we want you to get the right bar grating product for your application. If you’re unsure which stainless steel material type or bar grating construction method is best for your situation, please feel free to let us know.

Typical Stainless Steel Bar Grating Applications

The ability to withstand inclement weather, harsh chemicals and solvents, and impact damage while exhibiting a shiny appearance means stainless steel is suitable for a wide range of applications. Whether you’re seeking enhanced durability, striking looks, or surfaces that are sanitary and easy to clean, you can’t go wrong with stainless steel bar grating.
